1.Background and description
Inaugurated in January 2007, APM Terminals Mumbai is a joint venture between APM Terminals (74%) and the Container Corporation of India (26%). APM Terminals Mumbai (Registered as Gateway Terminals India Private Limited) has a 30-year license from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) to build and operate container handling services at its facility.
APM Terminals Mumbai is one of the three container terminals operating from Nhava Sheva's Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), just across the bay of Mumbai. It offers seamless linkage to major & minor Inland Container Depots (ICD) and to Container Freight Stations (CFS) through rail and road. With significant hinterland connectivity, the region controls almost 50% of India’s containerized cargo.
In terms of container throughput (TEUs), APM Terminals Mumbai is India’s busiest container terminal handling facility servicing approximately 13% of India's throughput and has achieved a record performance of handling over 2 million TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) in 2018. The terminal created Indian National Maritime Record handling 2.01 Million TEUs in FY2014-15, representing approximately 20% of India's containerized cargo. While the Jawaharlal Nehru Port recorded a combined throughput of 4.47 million TEUs, APM Terminals Mumbai accounted for nearly 45% of the Port’s throughput.
